  1. NOMINICATION:
  2. This is a 'Japlish' word taken from 'nomimasu' which
  3. means to drink and the last half of 'communication'.
  4. It refers to business socializing.

  6. Social entertaining is a business ritual done in bars,
  7. cabarets, and clubs because homes are so small. This is
  8. a time to cultivate trust, a foundation for successfully
  9. doing business in Japan. Participation in these activities
  10. is an asset.

  12. If you do not drink, sip lightly after the kampai and
  13. keep the glass as full as possible to keep it from being
  14. refilled. You may consider simulating drunkeness.

  16. Do not bring a club hostess to a social event
  17. connected with business associates. This is a major
  18. faux pas.

  20. One popular form of entertainment is the 'karaoke'
  21. or singing bar where a customer will stand up and
  22. sing into a microphone.

  25. If you are doing business on a regular basis, gift
  26. giving is most appropriate at mid-year (o-chugen,mid-July)
  27. and at year-end (o-seibo,first half of December).
  28. Gifts should be in good taste but not too expensive.
  29. Examples are Parker pens or desk accessories or golf balls
  30. with company logos;crafts or arts peculiar to your locale;
  31. t-shirts with university logos, table mats of scenes from
  32. your area, and nicely bound,illustrated books.  Liquour is
  33. an acceptable choice, however the Japanese do not care
  34. for bourbon. Make sure that everyone present receives the
  35. same gift/handout. Do not be surprised if the gift is
  36. unopened.

  38.   Presents should be gift wrapped.The traditional Japanese
  39. wrap (white handmade paper with rolled paper cords) is
  40. preferred to the Western wrap.

  42. During your visit, you may receive many little gifts
  43. which may be acknowledged by a thank-you note. Gifts
  44. should not be thought of as bribes but as an
  45. appreciation for a relationship.
